Varicose veins are twisted, swollen, enlarged blood vessels that are raised above the surface of the skin. They are found mostly in the legs, especially in the thigh and/or calves.
Veins have tiny valves that open as blood is pushed out of the leg veins toward the heart, then closes to stop the blood from flowing backwards. If these valves are damaged or weak, they don't close properly and pool in the vein. Varicose veins are most often the result of standing on your feet for long periods of time, family history, pregnancy, obesity and aging. Having varicose veins puts you at a higher risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots) that may be life threatening.
